Paulo Freitas
Pedro Paixão was born in Lisbon in February 1956. His mother, a pharmacist, was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, EUA. His father, an agricultural engineer (agronomist), was born in Abrunhosa do Mato, a village in Beira Alta. He has a sister and a niece. He is married for the fourth time and has a son.
He was a student at the French High School Charles Lepierre, at the Pedro Nunes High School and attended the Instituto Superior de Economia – Institute of Economics – for three years. He studied philosophy, among other disciplines, in Leuven and Heidelberg and took a doctorate at the age of 29.
He was involved in the founding of the weekly newspaper “O Independente” and left by the seventh issue. In 1989, he founded, with Miguel Esteves Cardoso, the agency Massa Cinzenta, Empresa de Ideias of which he was managing partner until 1995. He was professor of Philosophy at Universidade Nova, Lisbon, but gave up the academic career.
He published 21 books and 2 photo albums. He wrote two texts for theatre and one for opera. He began writing scripts for films. He never received any award, nor was he ever chosen to represent his country. He was a member of an underground political association which he abandoned in 1974, shortly after it was legalised. He never voted. He is not a member of any association, club, party or church. He swims in the ocean almost every day of the year.
