Manuel Luís Cochofel was born in Huambo, Angola, in 1965. He spent his childhood in Mozambique and came to Portugal in 1976. He lived in Lagos until 1978 and in Copenhagen in 1992. At present he lives and works in Lisbon.
He has a degree from Escola Superior de Música, Lisbon, and is an autodidact in Photography.
He has been taking photographs since 2000. The solo exhibition 'Rolling Lives' (2005) at Galeria Álvaro Roquette is one of the highlights of his career. He also took part in the artistic events that occurred simultaneously with LisboaPhoto, and ‘Stop.Motion’ (2006) at the Centro de Cultura Contemporânea, Torres Vedras.
In 2004 he exhibited ‘Uma forma concreta ou (re)velada’ with Teresa Huertas, and ‘Crush on Rush’, photographs of New York, with Rui Dias Monteiro in 2007; both shows took place at Galeria 9arte, in Lisbon. He has also shown his work at Galeria Mouraria, Funchal, Centro Cultural, Lagos, Outoño Fotográfico, Badajoz, and Galeria Primopiano, Lecce, Italy.
He received several awards at photography contests, such as, the Vila Franca de Xira 9th Photography Biennial in 2006.
Some of his photographs are depicted in books of the AVA collection published by Thames & Hudson, such as: ‘The AVA Guide to Travel Photography’, ‘The AVA Guide for Outdoor Portraits’ and ‘Photography FAQs: Portraits’.
Manuel Luís Cochofel is represented in various private and public collections in Portugal and abroad, namely: Optimus, Thyssen, Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Tubus, Câmara Municipal de Vila Franca de Xira, and Câmara Municipal da Moita.
